Money Wellness Weekly updateMoney and Mental Health: Breaking the Taboo
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: money and mental health—a duo often whispered about in society, shrouded in stigma and taboo. Our financial well-being and mental health are deeply interconnected, and it's high time we shed some light on this topic.
For too long, conversations about money have been kept quiet, as if discussing our financial situations is akin to revealing a state secret. Similarly, mental health, despite strides in awareness, still carries a hush-hush aura. The reality is the state of our finances can significantly impact our mental well-being and vice versa, creating a cycle that can either uplift us or pull us down.
Financial stress is like an uninvited dinner guest who overstays their welcome. It’s persistent, pervasive, and can wreak havoc on our mental health. Worrying over bills, saving for the future, or the guilt of unnecessary splurges can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
Turning the tide means recognizing the importance of mental health in financial decisions. Making informed choices that contribute to overall well-being could mean setting up a budget with a ‘mental health’ fund for joy-bringing activities or educating oneself about personal finance to alleviate unknown stress.
Opening up the conversation is the first step in breaking the taboo. Discussing financial struggles and successes openly can help demystify the connection between money and mental health, making it approachable and manageable.
In the spirit of breaking taboos, seeking professional help when needed is key. In my own therapy my attitudes towards money and trauma associated with it have been instrumental in understanding my own spending and saving patterns. I encourage you to seek out help. Consulting with a financial advisor or speaking to a mental health professional can be the best decision for mental and financial health.

By addressing the taboo head-on, we can pave the way for a healthier, wealthier, and happier life. Remember, feeling overwhelmed by financial pressures is okay; taking the first step towards understanding and openness is what will set you on the path to understanding and peace of mind.
Your mental health is worth it.
