[“Leah Schmidt Founder Expand Hope” in office.]
The inspiration behind creating Expand Hope is we wanted our children to understand what it is to live in the world today, to become good responsible global citizens.
[“Marvin Schmidt Founder Expand Hope Head of The Schmidt Investment Group” in office.]
The Expand Hope revenue model is unlike most other not for profit models in Canada.
It is not based on private donations.
It does not require any donations from any one individual source.
It is based on partnering with businesses, in this case, The Schmidt Investment Group, whereby any new revenue that comes in from any new clients to The Schmidt Investment Group at CIBC Private Wealth will get directed toward Expand Hope for impact to some of the most vulnerable people on the planet.
[“Nigel Seth Senior Associate Investment Advisor The Schmidt Investment Group”.]
We ensure that one hundred percent of the revenue actually does land in the field.
There is no leakage with regard to administrative costs or other aspects of running a foundation.
This is very much about getting maximum dollars into the field.
[“Sinead McConomy Client Associate The Schmidt Investment Group”.]
The Expand Hope revenue model directs the first 18 months of all investment management revenue towards the Expand Hope Foundation if you are a new client to the Schmidt Investment Group and CIBC Private Wealth.
These funds will then be directed towards a school that is built in your honour, if you are either the client or the referrer.
[Marvin.]
We have decided to direct funds to a social impact brand.
It isn't a cost at all.
It is an investment to show the world that companies that are able to align towards human progress, will get rewarded in business if they're completely committed towards an initiative.
[“Linda Wilkie Business Leader The Schmidt Investment Group”.]
And so we think education is very important and that's why we've chosen to direct our revenue that way.
[“Andy Rempel Senior Associate Investment Advisor The Schmidt Investment Group”.]
Just looking at the size and scale of the resources that business can bring to bear on something that they feel is truly important.
It's so much easier for a business to focus and I think the results are potentially unlimited.
[“Lindsey Machona Executive Director Expand Hope”.]
Consumers drive business and businesses now more than ever have an opportunity to create platforms where consumers can choose to do business with a socially responsible brand and influence social change.
[“Cheryl Rajan Associate Investment Advisor The Schmidt Investment Group”.]
We can't forget that businesses cannot survive without the consumer and therefore the consumer has the power to make the change in the world.
[Marvin.]
When you have the ability to scale and you're a for profit enterprise to be able to use that scalability, those resources that are created, you can really change the exponential curve of solving some of the world's greatest problems when business is at the table.
[Sinead.]
What is revolutionary about this model is that it allows businesses to succeed while impact also happens.
[Lindsey.]
Impact trips are opportunities for our clients to go and visit the communities that we work in as Expand Hope, they provide all kinds of opportunities to meet and interact with the communities and hear from them firsthand about their dreams, their aspirations and their hopes for their communities and their future.
[Marvin.]
Throughout 2015 the Expand Hope team spent most of the year identifying and working with governments from around the world to identify where is the greatest need that exists.
We found that the most likely place to be able to really scale up our impact is in Guatemala.
[Leah.]
While the Schmidt Investment Group is focusing on the business aspect, we are focusing on the goal of eradicating poverty and making a change in the community of Guatemala and making a change in the communities here in Canada.
[Linda.]
I don't think it's a matter of can we afford to use revenue to build schools.
I think it's a matter of us wanting to make a difference in the world.
[Leah.]
Does it come back as a financial investment?
No, what this is, is this is a personal relationship, interpersonal growth kind of investment, something that you just can't even put a value on.
