Women & Their Wealth – Unique needs:
Despite the fact that women are more educated and in control of more wealth than ever before, many women still don't feel financially secure. In fact, a recent survey by Allianz Life Insurance indicates that "the thought of running out of money in retirement is what 57% of women say keeps them up at night."
Women tend to take a more holistic approach to investing, placing more emphasis on understanding all of the options and regularly reviewing their situation. But just as women define money, wealth, and financial success differently than men, they also approach investing and financial planning differently:
According to a recent survey by Fidelity Investments:
1. Women feel less confident than men about investing and their financial future.
- 60% of women worry about not having enough money to last through retirement
- 62% of women say they could use more knowledge to enable them to make smart financial decisions and are at least a little confused when it comes to navigating their future financial path
2. Women simply need more money. It is a fact that women live on average seven years longer than men, are often paid less and typically work fewer years, resulting in lower government pensions and employer-provided benefits. According to Fidelity, among women who are offered retirement guidance through their employer, 65% do not take advantage of it.
3. Women have more responsibilities. Women who work full-time still shoulder a majority of the household and childcare duties and they may also be part of the "sandwich generation" looking after both parents and children.
Despite this, 83% of women want to get more involved in their finances within the next year and say more support would encourage them to become more engaged in their finances.
