Our process begins with you. We recognize that all the questions and uncertainty surrounding retirement have their root in lifestyle. Specifically, our clients want to ensure that they can achieve or maintain the lifestyle they want after they stop working. We start with your personal vision of what you want your lifestyle to be, and that becomes the foundation and guide for your individual, customized financial solution.

With your input, we will translate that lifestyle vision into concrete numbers to create measurable, realizable goals. Then, using our unique asset dedication platform, we build and structure your financial assets in order to achieve those goals.  We will work with you to ensure you stay informed and engaged with all of our investment recommendations.   • Create and implement a financial strategy to counter risks due to health issues
  • Promote a health consultation by well-respected physicians
  • Explore alternative medical strategies where required
  • Update medical tax strategies as required in response to changes by the government.

Legacy Bucket
The Legacy Bucket is designed to provide the comfort of knowing your assets will be passed on in the way that you wish. In order to achieve this, we:

  • Determine your wishes for intergenerational wealth transition
  • Together with our internal team of experts, we can help prepare your draft will, power of attorney and personal directives, or work with the legal services provider of your choice to create the documents
  • Create a family and charity decision tree for your estate plan
  • Quantify and optimize the tax liabilities in your estate plan

Tax is an integral part of all financial planning, so we look at it both from an overall portfolio perspective and in connection with each of the buckets. Utilizing our '3D' tax overlay model (deduct, defer, divide), we test each of the four buckets to ensure that your plan is optimized for tax-efficiency.

As a team, the Popowich Karmali Advisory Group is not tied to one product group. We are licensed across the spectrum of all financial products and we view them collectively as tools to help you to achieve your specific solutions rather than inventory to be sold. As there are material tax differences among the different capital pools that you may own (for example, holding corporations, professional corporations, registered and non-registered capital), our customized solution will utilize the financial product most beneficial and best designed to reach your specific goal. All financial products that we recommend are thoroughly researched, matched to your lifestyle goals, and consistent with our investment thesis based on our current economic call.

Transparency and Accountability

Transparency and Accountability

Our team practices full transparency. We do not begin the investment process without providing a fully documented plan that includes your goals, mutually agreed-upon recommendations, and full transparency regarding any fees you may pay, including a specific dollar figure. Our practice is also fully fee-based, meaning you pay a fixed percentage rate which covers all of our services. This further aligns the interests of our team with your goals; we have no incentive to make trades for the purposes of generating commission, but only to make recommendations and decisions that will increase your net worth. The fee rate is determined by the size of your portfolio, how actively managed the assets are, and the particular financial products required to meet your specific goals.

Our ongoing service model is based on regular 'road-map' reviews. Although each of these reviews will have a market review element, the focus of each of these meetings is to ensure that the plan that we have in place still reflects and is achieving your holistic goals and priorities. We are comfortable using technology to maintain contact, and are available whenever you have questions about your retirement.


As a largely discretionary investment practice, our clients are generally involved in a strategic capacity, rather than on every tactical trade (the implementation of that strategy). Although we are open to an arrangement that allows you a 'do-it-yourself' portfolio where you select the individual holdings, we believe the value provided by the Popowich Karmali Advisory Group is to remove the worry and stress of individual stock-picking and provide a complete portfolio solution. This means that you will not be constantly called with offers for new securities and regarding every trade in your portfolio (perfect for those who are snowbirds, travel frequently, or who do not want the stress of making highly-detailed investment decisions), but fully expect your participation on any strategic decisions and portfolio changes being contemplated due to changes in the economic environment or material changes to your personal circumstances. This will ensure the continued alignment of your financial situation with your goals, while reducing your stress and the amount of work you may need to do to maintain your portfolio.
