Canadians may also be surprised to learn that our two-tiered system for long-term care means seniors could face year-long wait time to enter publicly-funded facilities. While nursing home care, the largest expense for those over the age of 85 is only covered for those with acute illness.

RAHUL ARORA: When you buy an investment, you acquire something that may change it in the value over time. However, there are ways to influence, if not control how your investments perform through various portfolio management techniques. Today I'm sharing some core concepts related to portfolio management that underlie an effective strategy regardless of your personal circumstances.
First one is asset allocation. It is how your investments portfolio is structured by investment types, duration, amounts, et cetera. Selecting the right allocation of an asset and adjusting them to changing conditions can put you on the right path to meeting your financial goals. It is also an important strategy for reducing risk.
Next is diversification. It is choosing a variety of investment vehicles with different performance characteristics to achieve a better overall return. Diversification reduces fluctuations in the value of individual investments. Next is managing risk. Managing risk means more than just avoiding an investment loss. It also means outpacing inflation and being able to capture possible gains. Risk arises from different factors, some controllable, some not, but risk can be managed.
Lastly, managing rewards. With rewards come responsibilities and obligations. For example, realizing positive returns usually results in obligations to pay taxes. However, not all investments are taxed alike. Some get preferential treatment. Also, a loss in one investments may offset a gain from another.
