Planning Today for Tomorrow: Setting Your Kids Up for Academic Success

Planning Today for Tomorrow: Setting Your Kids Up for Academic Success

From Avin’s Diary

As another school year begins, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to students everywhere, heading back to class. Whether it is the first day of kindergarten, the transition into high school, or the big leap into university, this season reminds us of how education shapes futures. It also reminds us of the dedication, sacrifice, and planning that parents quietly put in behind the scenes to make these milestones possible.

Over the years, I’ve seen again and again that supporting a child’s post-secondary education is one of the most meaningful (and often most challenging) financial commitments for families. For many of our clients, it is one of the very first goals we discuss when beginning our work together. The reality is, education today is more expensive than ever. Tuition, housing, books, and everyday living costs add up quickly. But with early preparation and a clear strategy, parents can help their children step confidently into their futures without the heavy weight of financial stress.

My Own Story
I speak about this not only from professional experience, but also from my own journey as a parent. My wife and I were determined to see both of our children through their higher education. With years of hard-earned savings — combined with the same strategies I now share with clients — I was able to support both of my kids in pursuing their dreams. Ankit completed his secondary and post-secondary schooling at Toronto Montessori and then BBA & MBA at Schulich School of Business, while Pearl went on to complete her undergraduate studies at University of Toronto and then chiropractic school.

I still remember the moment of writing that very first tuition cheque. It was a big number, and while I was proud, I also felt the weight of what was ahead. What gave me confidence, however, was knowing I had built a financial foundation that could sustain it. For me, defensive option strategies, particularly covered call writing, played a key role. These strategies provided steady cash flow that helped cover recurring expenses like tuition and housing, while also protecting our portfolio during uncertain markets.

The reward, of course, was worth every sacrifice: watching Ankit and Pearl cross their graduation stages and step confidently into their careers and futures. For me, it was a powerful reminder that the right planning, combined with patience and discipline, doesn’t just manage money, it creates opportunities, peace of mind, and proud family milestones.

How We Can Help
With 25 years of experience, our team at Mehra Wealth Management Group continues to guide families with compassion, clarity, and care. Whether you are just beginning to save, already facing tuition costs, or hoping to involve your children in financial discussions, we are here to support you:

Starting Early, Growing Together: We know that every family’s journey is unique, but one truth remains: beginning early makes a lasting difference. Even modest, consistent contributions to an education savings plan can grow into a strong foundation for the future. Parents often share that the greatest comfort comes not just from the savings itself, but from the peace of mind that their children can focus fully on their studies and passions.

A Strategy that Supports Families: Over the years, we have had the privilege of guiding countless families through this same path, planning for tuition, managing expenses, and at the same time ensuring long-term goals like retirement are not sacrificed. A thoughtful plan creates balance, confidence, and the freedom to pursue education without compromise.

Empowering Students with Financial Literacy: One of the lessons I value most is that education is not just about academics. That is why we encourage kids and teens to be part of our conversations. Teaching them about saving, budgeting, and financial planning early gives them skills that extend far beyond university- skills they will carry for a lifetime.

Education is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give — an act of love, sacrifice, and belief in a brighter tomorrow. Congratulations once again to all students embarking on a new school year. It has been an honour to help many families get to this point, and we look forward to walking alongside many more in the years ahead.

Good luck Students!

Avin
