Prior to joining CIBC Wood Gundy, he held a number of roles as President, CEO and CFO of publicly traded companies. In 2002, as president and CEO of Optipress Inc., Derek led a team that successfully completed an initial public offering (IPO) presenting to 50 organizations in Canada and the United States over a 10 day period.
As President of Robinson Blackmore Printing and Publishing in Newfoundland, Derek was involved in the Community Newspaper Association, and became the first national president of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association from Newfoundland, providing an appreciation for coordinating development across the entire country. As well, Derek has been involved in the St. John’s Board of Trade, Canadian Red Cross and the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Derek completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Chartered Accountancy designation prior to entering the finance industry. After joining CIBC Wood Gundy, he completed other competency programs, including Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and was named to the FPSC President’s list, Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Investment Manager (CIM), and is a fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).

He believes a financial plan is critical to each client and the cornerstone of the relationship. By creating an in depth financial plan he guides his clients through the three main pillars-Building wealth, preserving wealth and transferring generational wealth-all in a tax efficient manner. Steve strives to educate clients on investments and retirement planning by having several meetings throughout the year and also emailing relevant content to keep them up to date.
Steve has been in the finance industry for over a decade and with Wood Gundy since 2016. Steve has a bachelors degree in Business Administration with a focus on finance from Memorial University. As an active member of the community he is currently the Vice Chair of the Newfoundland IIROC District Council and is a Past President of the Canadian Progress Club chapter whose two charity mandates are the Vera Perlin Society and Special Olympics.
In his spare time, Steve enjoys staying active with his young family. Favorite past times include hiking this beautiful province as well as playing many sports such as golf, tennis, hockey, and skiing.
