John Mahoney
Investment Advisor
John completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) from Memorial University in 1990. Following several years as a management consultant, which culminated in the operation of his own management consulting practice, he completed a Master of Business Administration degree at St. Mary's University. John joined CIBC Wood Gundy as an Investment Advisor in 1997. His approach to business focuses on listening to the client, quality, diversification, asset allocation, financial planning, estate planning, and the use of insurance where appropriate.
Beyond his work, John is a valuable contributor to the local community. He is a very active member and Past President of the Rotary Club of St. John's East, and is a recipient of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. John's post-secondary education began with the completion of a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, followed by completion of an MBA at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia during which he won numerous awards for academic excellence. He continues his connection with Memorial University by serving as a regular guest speaker for Dr. Alex Faseruk's undergraduate and graduate finance classes. John also participated in the local YMCA-YWCA's recent capital fundraising campaign for the construction of its new facility on Higgins Line in St. John's.
John is married to Leslie Ann and they have two amazing sons – John Nicholas and Evan. John's hobbies include staying fit, recreational ice hockey and spending time at the family's cabin.
Valerie Whelan, B.Comm.
Investment Advisor Assistant
Valerie holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) Degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has been working with CIBC Wood Gundy since 1994 and holds her Professional Financial Planning and Investment Management Techniques Courses from the Canadian Securities Institute. Valerie is responsible for the client service side of the business. She is noted for her efficiency and professional manner in assisting clients and is available to answer any and all questions and requests. Val currently resides in Torbay with her husband Blair and their son Austin.

In addition to his sales and management roles, he also brings experience from the actuarial side of the desk. This perspective allows him to have a deeper understanding in dealing with insurance needs. Bruce brings with him a strong analytical and mathematical background, having earned his MSc. in Mathematics from Dalhousie University.
