Morning Market Brief

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on approximately $27.6 billion of US goods took effect just after midnight yesterday, matching Washington’s 50% tariffs on Canadian goods dollar-for-dollar. The US had imposed fresh tariffs on Canada after trade negotiations fell apart at the eleventh hour. In a national address, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the measures were necessary but cautioned they would come at a cost to Canadians.

  • The tariffs target US steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, sunscreen, among others. This was a “focused response” Carney says to the US administration’s tariffs on Canadian goods like honey, hockey sticks, milk and cheese.
  • Carney said the government is not thrilled to be taking this step, cautioning that these new tariffs could increase costs and reduce choices for Canadians. He noted that the tariffs are necessary to protect our workers and businesses, not to escalate the trade war.
  • On Monday, US President Donald Trump threatened to ban sales of Bombardier Inc. jets in the US. He had earlier said that if Canada does impose these retaliatory tariffs, he would retaliate with measures of his own.
  • Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that Canada and the European Union (EU) are working towards a new relationship ranging from security to trade. EU President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to announce plans on September 16. Carney is scheduled to address EU leaders the next day.
  • Carney says Canada won’t resume negotiations until the US changes its tone, and no new talks are currently scheduled.

Yesterday’s tariffs mark a new phase in the trade dispute, not a resolution. Carney framed the response as protecting Canadian workers and businesses while acknowledging real costs for households and consumers. With no talks scheduled, expect continued volatility in trade-exposed sectors and the Canadian dollar as this standoff plays out.
