November 2022

We don’t need to tell you that it has been a very eventful few years. With the ongoing political machinations south of the border, the pandemic, the war in Europe, high inflation, more powerful natural disasters, and elevated market volatility, it has felt like everything has been off-kilter. Many of you have expressed a desire to return to something that resembles normal.

July 2022 

June was another tough month, after a pause in May. As of the end of June, the S&P 500 had the worst start of the year since 1970. With the underperformance of bonds in the first quarter, followed by equities in the second, the classic 60/40 balanced portfolio has had one of the worst half years in  history.

April 2022

Going into 2022, we had a mildly positive view but were cognizant of rising inflation and the signaling by central banks that they would have to raise rates. COVID weariness was apparent but it seemed that we have probably seen the worst so we were optimistic that economies would open up. Looking back, maybe we were a little too complacent because the first four months have been an incredible roller coaster, both financially and emotionally.

January 2022 

We would like to spend most of this commentary on what we are expecting for 2022, but we thought we would spend a few moments also reviewing 2021. The outstanding performance of our portfolios pleasantly surprised us in 2021. If you look under the hood, it is even more impressive when you consider the risk-adjusted returns which were probably the highest in our career.
